Mohammad Aziz

Mohammad Aziz, affectionately known as Munna, was a celebrated Indian playback singer who became one of the dominant male voices in Hindi, Bengali, and Odia cinema during the late 1980s and 1990s. Born in West Bengal, he began his musical journey singing at local gigs in Kolkata before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in film music. Discovered by music director Anu Malik, Aziz made his big Hindi playback debut with the film 'Mard' (1985), where the massive hit 'Mard Tangewala' propelled him into national prominence. Blessed with a versatile, high-register voice strongly reminiscent of his idol Mohammed Rafi, Aziz quickly became a preferred choice for legendary composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, as well as R. D. Burman and Kalyanji-Anandji. Throughout his peak era, Aziz lent his powerful vocals to top Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, Rishi Kapoor, Govinda, and Sunny Deol. He rendered scores of legendary chartbusters such as 'My Name Is Lakhan' (Ram Lakhan), 'Aap Ke Aa Jane Se' (Sanju), 'Dil Tera Kisne Todeya' (Phool Aur Kaante), 'Imli Ka Boota' (Saudagar), and 'Main Seena Taan Ke Khada Hoon' (Mard). Beyond Hindi cinema, he achieved colossal success in the Odia music industry, becoming a household name with thousands of devotional and film tracks, alongside notable contributions to Bengali, Bhojpuri, and Assamese playback music. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Mohammad Aziz recorded over 20,000 songs, leaving an everlasting legacy in the Indian music landscape. Renowned for his soaring vocal range, soulful expression, and adaptability across romantic, energetic, classical, and devotional styles, he earned numerous honors, including prestigious state music awards and lifetime achievement accolades. His contribution remains a cornerstone of 1980s and 1990s Bollywood music.
