Hemanta Mukherjee

Hemanta Mukherjee (born 5 May 1920 in Bahadurpur, Bengal Presidency, British India) was a legendary Indian playback singer, music director, and actor whose deep, resonant baritone became the hallmark of Hindi and Bengali cinema from the 1940s through the 1970s. After moving to Calcutta, he began his career as a radio announcer and soon caught the attention of film producers, debuting as a playback singer in the 1945 Bengali film "Milan". His collaboration with eminent composers such as S.D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, and R.D. Burman produced timeless classics like "Aaja Re O Mere Dilbar" (Hindi) and "Bojhena Shei Kotha" (Bengali), cementing his status as a versatile vocalist adept at both romantic ballads and devotional songs. Beyond playback singing, Hemanta composed music for numerous films, notably directing the scores for "Madhumati" (1958) and "Saptapadi" (1961). His contributions earned him multiple accolades, including the Padma Bhushan (1974) and the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. A recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, he also recorded countless Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geeti renditions, preserving the cultural heritage of Bengal. Hemanta’s legacy endures through his son, the celebrated singer and composer Bhupinder Singh, and through countless contemporary artists who cite his emotive phrasing and mellifluous baritone as a profound influence.
