Debayan Banerjee

Debayan Banerjee (Bengali: দেবায়ন ব্যানার্জি) is an Indian playback and contemporary vocalist hailing from Kolkata, West Bengal. Trained in Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of Ustad Rashid Khan, he transitioned to the film industry in the early 2010s, making his debut with the song “Madhur Milan” for the Bengali movie “Bhalobasha Express”. His smooth baritone and emotive phrasing quickly earned him recognition, leading to collaborations with prominent composers such as Anupam Roy, Arko Pravo Mukherjee, and Amit Trivedi. Since his breakthrough, Debayan has delivered several chart‑topping tracks across Bengali and Hindi cinema, including “Moner Kotha” (2015), “Tere Bina” (2017) and the soulful duet “Jibon Jatra” with Shreya Ghoshal (2020). He has been nominated for the Filmfare Awards East for Best Playback Singer (Male) and received the West Bengal Film Journalists’ Association (WBFJA) award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2021. Apart from film work, he explores indie pop and folk‑fusion projects, releasing the EP “Rang De” in 2022, which showcases his versatility and commitment to preserving regional musical heritage. Debayan continues to perform live across India and the diaspora, often incorporating classical ragas into contemporary arrangements. He is also an advocate for music education, conducting workshops for aspiring singers in Kolkata and supporting charitable initiatives through his foundation “Sur Sadhana”.
